Warli art

Our Warli art workshop begins with storytelling, where participants learn about the rich tribal heritage and cultural significance of this ancient indigenous art from Maharashtra. Next, they explore the essential geometric shapes—circles, triangles, squares—that form the foundation of Warli motifs and understand the symbolism behind animals, nature, and rituals depicted in the art. The hands-on phase teaches the traditional technique of painting with rice paste on dark surfaces like canvas or fabric, guiding participants to create simple yet expressive Warli scenes. Finally, the workshop covers finishing touches and ways to preserve and display the artwork, allowing everyone to take home a unique piece of tribal storytelling and tradition through their own hand-crafted designs.

Storytelling

The workshop begins by sharing the fascinating origins and cultural importance of Warli art, a tribal painting style from Maharashtra. Participants hear stories of its use in village rituals, celebrations, and as a reflection of daily life—connecting them deeply to this ancient folk tradition.

Understanding Shapes & Symbols

Next, learners explore the fundamental geometric shapes—circles, triangles, and squares—that form the building blocks of Warli art. They discover the meanings behind Warli symbols, such as animals, trees, and human figures, gaining insight into the stories these simple forms tell.

Painting Technique

Participants then practice the traditional Warli technique, using white rice paste or paint on dark backgrounds like fabric or canvas. They learn brush control and create scenes that capture the rhythm and spirit of tribal life with simple, expressive strokes.

Finishing Touches & Preservation

The workshop concludes with guidance on enhancing and preserving the artworks, including drying, framing, and display suggestions. Each participant leaves with a unique, handcrafted masterpiece infused with tribal lore and artistic heritage.
